General Description of Medical Services at The Center for Women's Health & Wellness
Gynecology deals with the diagnosis
and treatment of disorders of the female reproductive organs. Included in this category
are menstrual irregularities, abnormal bleeding, infections, abdominal pain, and bladder
control. Cancer screening and all aspects of family planning (contraception) are also
gynecological services that we provide.
Dr. Scott Eder has expertise in adolescent gynecology as well as menopausal management.
Patience, understanding, gentleness, and education characterize our adolescent care.
Concerns of older women, including hormonal replacement therapy and sexual function are
specialties of the practice.
Dr. Eder and his staff continue to keep abreast of new
advances in gynecology through continuing medical education
programs each year.
Examples of Some Specialized Medical Treatments and Programs
Especially for Teens and Young Women
Human
Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the most commonly sexually transmitted
infection (STI). It is a virus that can cause cervical cancer and is
generally detected from an abnormal pap
smear during a gynecological exam. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) provides an exellent educational overview about this virus and its symptoms. The Gardasil vaccine may significantly reduce the chances of developing cervical
cancer. An increasing number of teenage girls and young women are choosing this vaccine treatment today.
For Women of Varying Ages and Stages
Advances in medical technology continue to provide new options for women's healthcare. For example, for women who prefer less invasive options to the traditional vaginal or abdominal hysterectomy, listed below are several alternatives. Dr. Eder will explain the options based on each patient's individual health needs and requirements.
Endometrial Ablation This is a short and minimally invasive surgical procedure that can control excess bleeding and can stop
or reduce menstrual flow. Dr. Eder performs the Gynecare Thermachoice procedure.
Hormonal Treatments Medications such as birth control pills, Provera and
Lupron can be used to treat menstrual disorders and also either avoid or delay hysterectomy. In addition, an intrauterine device, (IUD) containing a low dose of a progesterone-like hormone called Mirena can be inserted into the uterus to reduce menstrual flow.
Robotic Assisted Surgery A very effective and minimally invasive option. Procedures such a hysterectomies (removal of uterus) and myomectomies (fibroid tumor removal) can be conducted laparascopically with very small incisions, resulting a shorter hospital stay, and a much faster recovery. Dr. Scott Eder was the first gynecologist in Mercer County to be trained and to use the Da Vinci surgical robot for gynecological procedures.
